BE A MENTOR TO A BOULDER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT
To learn more about Boulder Arts Focus Pathway (BAFP) program please go to Boulder High School website using this link: Boulder High Mentorships
NoBo Art District would like its members to consider being a source of “apprenticeship and mentoring opportunities” for Boulder High School arts students enrolled in the – Arts Focus Pathway (BAFP) program.
Boulder High School students interested in an arts career have the opportunity to get extra curriculum experience through BHS’s own Arts Focus Pathway (BAFP) program. BAFP is an exciting program that offers students who have a passion for the visual and performing arts to earn an endorsement on their diploma for completing courses in the arts, mentoring with local artists, and making art an integral part of their lives.
If you are interested in being a mentor – email BHS art teacher, Virginia Schick by AUGUST 15th for the upcoming FALL 2016 semester. Please put BAFP Mentor in the subject line of your email. Email virginia.schick@bvsd.org
Send Virginia Schnick the following info:
• name
• media/concentration
• tasks that you need help with
• email
• phone
• artists website address if you have one
(BAFP) students are required to work outside of the classroom each semester with a mentor as an apprentice or at a job that has an arts focus. BHS students are engaged in everything from graphic design, film and video, fine arts, ceramics, robotics, performance, art therapy, fiber, painting, etc. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in BAFP and 2.5 GPA at BHS to be enrolled in BAFA.
What happens next?
The student would contact the artist directly to set up an introductory meeting with the student and parent. This meeting would allow all parties to make sure that are comfortable with the mentor/student match. The student and artist and parents would set the amount of hours that the student would be available for apprenticing. The term of the apprenticeship would be by semester – but it could roll over to two semesters or longer if the student/mentor relationship was working well. The mentor-ship can be paid, volunteer or a bit of both.
The NOBO mentor needs to convey to the student and parent some of the various tasks that the NOBO member would like the student to help out with during their mentorship such as, stretching canvas, organizing your studio, mixing paint, help you hang a show, etc.
Please note that Boulder High School takes no liability for the student or the mentor during this apprenticeship.
More about (Boulder) Arts Focus Pathway (BAFP) program
Students will take part in visual and performing arts opportunities outside of the school day, thereby embedding the arts in their everyday lives. This will be done by completing a minimum number of hours attending arts events, taking lessons, participating in performances, or apprenticing in the arts community with a professional organization or individual artist. Each BAFP student will meet a minimum number of hours, which are as follows:
• Freshman = 5+ hours per semester
• Sophomore = 10+ hours per semester
• Junior = 15+ hours per semester
• Senior = 20+ hours per semester
We encourage upperclassmen to mentor with an artist/arts organization in the community in a career they are interested in. BAFP will match students with an opportunity. Parents will be required to meet with the volunteer, approve the mentorship, and supervise the “apprenticeship.” A teacher and the BAFP coordinator will assist in this opportunity.
Questions – email virginia.schick@bvsd.org
