Fall Fest draws over 80,000 weekend visitors, combining live music, a beer/wine/margarita garden, children’s activities and four blocks packed with 130+ fabulous Firefly Handmade artisans.

In addition to the thousands of loyal Firefly shoppers from throughout the Boulder/Denver metro area, you can expect local residents, national and international tourists, and college students from the nearby University of Colorado to comprise the majority of attendees visiting Pearl Street and your Firefly booth space.

About The Pearl Street Pedestrian Mall – The cultural, social and retail hub of Boulder, the Mall is a four block segment of Pearl Street closed to vehicle traffic, filled with one of a kind boutiques, nationally celebrated restaurants, and thrilling street performers. Framed at the west end of Pearl Street by the foothills of the majestic Rockies, the Mall has numerous restored buildings dating back to the 1880’s gold mining era which surround the brick walkways, shade trees, fountains, sculptures, and flower gardens that define this unique pedestrian environment.

Group Exhibit Themes – You are welcome to submit any style of art from abstract to representational and in any medium you like in interpretation of these themes. The following descriptors are not absolute, they are merely suggestions to give you a starting point.

Celebration of Color: We live in a world resplendent in color. Celebrate the colors of the world in your art and travel wherever this suggestion takes you.

Gray Scale: If you’re not feeling like producing a celebration of color, what direction can you go in interpreting gray scale or in recognition of stark or sublime neutrals? Does “gray scale” simply mean hue to you, or can you take it in a more abstract, conceptual direction?

Dusk to Dawn: The time between sunset and sunrise is magical. Stars twinkle in the night sky; the moon shines silvery light on the earth; creatures snuggle down, protecting themselves for a night of rest, or take to the air or go on the prowl. What images does this time suggest to you? Bedtime stories, sweet dream flights of fancy, surreal images, or terrifying nightmares? Consider the challenge of representing what the night means to you.

Your Wildest Dreams: Our dreams can recount the mundane and worrisome elements of the conscious day or they can solve problems, provide visions for what might be, turn events inside out and render them surreal or hilarious. What are your wildest dreams? Take this challenge and create art that speaks to YOUR wildest dreams.

Can you kitsch me? One definition of kitsch refers to art that reflects popular or “low brow” taste. “Kitsch” can describe tacky knick knacks found in a junk shop, but as artists, you can incorporate these objects in items that delight and bring a smile, or provoke new ideas and conversations. Outsider, “brut” art often has elements of kitsch and this art is often approachable to children and adults alike.

Flight: Flights of fancy, fluttering of wings, the power of turbines, a brilliant stroke of the mind like Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. What is your interpretation of “Flight?” Take this theme and fly with it.

In My Corner: The idiomatic direction for this theme means support by another, e.g. “Mom was always in my corner.” You may want to play with this interpretation or think about your own “corner of the world.” Does this theme suggest architecture to you and an actual corner? Play with this theme and have fun.

Frontiers: Simply defined, a frontier is a line or border providing a separation. This can be a separation of land – between countries or territories, settled land versus wilderness. A frontier may also describe the extreme limit of understanding or achievement in an area of study, e.g. “extending the frontiers of knowledge.” Is there a frontier that your art celebrates, describes or defines?

Wellness: While we are not predetermining which themed exhibit will be placed within each specific venue, there is one exception. Awaken Chiropractic, a NoBo member sharing space with other wellness practitioners, is looking for art that speaks directly to the theme of “Wellness.” The National Wellness Institute lays out three generally accepted principles of wellness, 1) a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential, 2) a multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and environment, and 3) a quality that is positive and affirming. Would you like to expand on these principles? What does wellness look like for a society? For the planet? For …?

Take a Stand: The past year presented us with many opportunities to take a stand on political, social, environmental issues and more. This exhibit is an opportunity to interpret taking a stand in whatever way is meaningful to you. Here are some paraphrased elements from activist Holly Near’s New Year’s Facebook post to stimulate your thinking: ‘Focus on that which moves us up. … Not just about wrongs, but our rights. Lift up law and civility. Talk about how we organize. Avoid nagging about little things. Post our news. Share acts of resistance going on in towns all over the world. We are not the first, we are not the last. Put resistance, art and beauty on the front page of social media. Inspire each other. Thank each other. Invite each other. Here comes 2018!

Boulder OSMP and the Arts

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.”

-Albert Einstein

OSMP is seeking artist instructors for the 2018 OSMP and the Arts Program, a non- residential program that includes outdoor based hike workshops on OSMP lands.

For nearly a decade, the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department Art Program (OSMP and the Arts) has served to connect people to the amazing lands and wildlife surrounding Boulder through the talents of local artists. By coming together to celebrate the beauty of the natural world through various art-focused hikes and programs, the OSMP and the Arts Program allows Boulder residents to participate in an ancient, but still relevant, way of experiencing and connecting to land.

Guest artists working in various media offer workshops on the trails surrounding Boulder and occasionally offer presentations about their work. The workshops are designed for adults of any artistic skill level… beginners are very welcome! In addition to the public programs, we also have a bi-annual community art show welcoming the work of any community member who wishes to share a creative expression of their relationship with OSMP lands and wildlife.

For those of you interested in participating in the OSMP and the Arts program, please visit https://bouldercolorado.gov/osmp/osmp-and-the-arts to learn more about Artist Instructors and to submit an application.

Call to Artists – Request for Qualifications and Proposals (RFQ&P)

The NoBo Art District Welcome Mural

Artist Stipend:  $2000

Submittal Deadline:  August 13th, 2018 6:00 PM

Opportunity Description

The NoBo Art District requests qualifications and proposals from local artists, for a mural opportunity that will serve as a place-making project and welcoming landmark for the NoBo Art District. This mural project will be considered a temporary art installation with an expected minimum lifespan of 2-5 years.

The Mission of the NoBo Art District is to enrich and advance the arts in Boulder through educational activities and engagement that promote the role of artists and creatives in our community.

Background

NoBo Art District is a unique evolving enclave at the north edge of Boulder. Split by Broadway into its two unique personalities, this eclectic developing district is ripe for new visual and urban design interventions that mark its place and possibilities for residents, visitors, artists and others. New public art and buildings will begin to define the existing funky, rural, strip and neo industrial character on the west side, and sensitive infill projects will complement the successful well known new neo historic urban development and established commercial destinations at Holiday on the east side of Broadway. As a center for new social services serving the whole city, Boulders homeless shelter and affordable housing strengthen the neighborhood’s diverse character with shining new facilities and needed affordable residences. Along Broadway today high-end cycling shops, coffee shops and  restaurants market sophisticated hipster experiences and food alongside occasional food trucks , artist and maker studios, new real estate projects, mobile home projects, chain lodging, and a very large collection of storage centers.

Location

The site is located on the west side of Broadway at Violet in Boulder, at the southernmost entry point of the district and will serve as a welcoming landmark and visual identifier for the NoBo Art District. The building’s exterior is a mix of smooth and rough concrete block surface. The mural will be located on the south side wall and the left side of the front of the building, (currently Stradalli Cycle Sport retail store.)

Site Photos & Dimensions:

Front Wall

Front wall dimensions: W: 208” x H: 176

South side wall view

South Wall w/dimensions

Eligibility

This project is open only to artists or artist teams who reside and do their artistic work in front range Colorado, including Boulder County and the surrounding areas.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal of qualifications.

Project Goals

  1. Increased visibility for the NoBo Art District
  2. Building community among the neighbors and local businesses
  3. Creating pedestrian friendly experiences
  4. Supporting the local economy
  5. Visually defining the NoBo Art District

Design & Themes

This mural will be an early mark of the universal creative spirit and bright energy becoming more public in NoBo with art, events and developing infrastructure.  It will help to establish a creative identity and spirit for the developing NoBo Art District, particularly on the west side of Broadway. It’s south facing wall will be seen by many people along the busy Broadway corridor and will delight people with a unique, bold and cheerful character. The theme could speak to the disappearing cultural legacy of the area (Holiday Drive-In, Industrial Legacy, Bus Stop, etc.), or the future of our creative cultural landscape. It’s important to recognize that it does not need to repeat the already well known Boulder recreation and natural graphic identities. This mural will serve as a significant temporary landmark and entry feature in NoBo, and the mural will express NoBo as an artful and special place to live, work and play.

The community describes the NoBo Art District as:

Alive • First Friday Art • active • bikers • artists’ haven • gritty • excitement • beautiful, radiant, dramatic light • innovative • creative spirit • casual atmosphere • cauldron of opportunities • community • contemporary • crossroads • contrasts in new and old • urban • offbeat • potential • developing open opportunities • scrappy • vintage • good restaurants • inclusive • individualistic • inviting • less crowded • unique to our city • multidimensional • old, but so NEW! • new restaurants, shops • old strip mall • quirky

Evaluation Criteria

Artists proposals will be evaluated based on artistic merit, community impact and managerial capability using the following evaluation scoring criteria:

  • High quality and reflection of aesthetic appropriate for NoBo Art District mural project goals
  • Adaptability to the collaborative process of public art design
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of public art creation
  • Ability to create a unique and engaging work of art appropriate in concept, materials and scale
  • NoBo Artist membership (preferred but not required)
  • People’s choice design favorite (a selection of finalists may have the opportunity for public feedback which will be considered in the final selection)
  • Availability to complete work before September 30, 2018

Selection Process

The NoBo Art District will convene an appropriate selection panel including NoBo board members, community and business members, building owner/renters and arts administrators. The selection panel will review each applicant’s work samples and materials in order to evaluate qualifications and the design proposal of the applicant based on the above mentioned “evaluation criteria”.

The community input portion of the process may include both online and event based feedback on a semi-finalist selection of artists that will then be considered in the final selection process.

Project Scope and Budget

Mural designs should extend the full south side of the building and wrap around to the front left of the building. Artists may elect to design with the structure of the rough blocking, eliminating or incorporating it into their designs.

A stipend of $2000 for the Artist should include materials, time, insurance etc.

NoBo Art District will provide additional materials support up to $500 (as needed) for items such as scaffolding and paint.  NoBo Art District will provide a final UV/Anti-Graffiti coating after final installation.

Art Supply Drive for Artists in Cuba!

Please consider donating those unused art supplies you’ve been keeping for that someday project. This is a chance to pay it forward and help artists in Cuba. The following is from Mark Villarreal, artist and Boulder Arts Commissioner:

In the spring of 2016 I traveled to Cuba. Since my return I have been working on a new series of abstract paintings influenced by the experiences of this trip. What impressed me the most about Cuba was how proud and friendly the Cuban people are. Their drive to create with the little they have was impressive and humbling. One conversation sticks in my mind, when I asked, “what should we or our friends bring on our next visit to Cuba?”  The answer was, “anything you can think of”.
This is where the idea began. I personally have art materials in my painting studio that I have not touched in years, I know that this is true for other artists as well. These supplies will have a great and positive impact on the artists of Cuba. When surveying your studio(s) think small and light. The majority of these supplies will be taken by individuals in their own luggage.
I became a member of BOCUSCO ( Boulder – Cuba Sister City Organization (www.bouldercuba.org) and am currently in discussions with BOCUSCO to create supply line logistics. While BOCUSCO is tied directly to Yateras, Cuba these donations will be distributed by individuals that also travel to Baracoa, Guantánamo City and Santiago de Cuba.
For those who want to participate but live outside the area, you can mail me your donation. Cash donations will go towards purchase of new art supplies to be shipped. I will store donations until shipments occur from Boulder to Cuba. Please feel free to forward this to others that would want to participate in this endeavor.
The kick off for this campaign will be September 14th, opening night for a show of my Cuban series at Goodwin Fine Art in Denver and will continue for the shows duration. Donations can be made at the gallery opening night and later mailed or dropped off at my home.
Thank you for considering being a part of this art-supply drive for our Cuban artists!
Sincerely,
Mark Villarreal

World Art Drop Day!

https://www.mrjakeparker.com/art-drop-day/

All artists, (that means students and professionals, painters and cartoonists, sculptors and illustrators, animators and fine artists, photographers and printmakers; EVERYONE who creates) this September 4th* is World Art Drop Day. Wherever you find yourself that day, drop a piece of your art and tell someone where to find it. The world needs this right now. We need to feel a little more connection to each other and there’s nothing like the bond two random strangers can make through the act of creating and giving.

Here’s how it works:

  • Draw a picture and hide it somewhere.
  • Take a photo of either the art or the hiding spot or a combination of both.
  • Post the image, the city you dropped it in, and a hint on any social media of your choice. Be sure to included the hashtag: #artdropday
  • Then move on, hoping someone finds it. OR hang around and meet your new friend.

That’s it!

I need your help spreading the word on this. Reblog it, retweet it, facebook it, or even tell someone in person!

September 6th, lets connect the whole planet with art!
